IDD

The worldwide service project of the Kiwanis Club of Patchogue is to virtually eliminate the world's leading preventable cause of retardation—Iodine Deficiency Disorders or IDD. Kiwanis clubs around the world are conducting a campaign in partnership with UNICEF—The United Nations Children's Fund—to eliminate IDD this year.

To reach this goal, Kiwanis clubs have pledged to raise $75 million. The Kiwanis Club of Patchogue has pledged $15,000.

These funds will support the distribution of iodized salt in at risk areas, provide other remedial treatments, and educate the public on the benefits of using iodized salt.

Iodine is an important nutrient in the human diet.

Iodine is essential for the proper development of the brain and nervous system, and a lack of iodine can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, or the birth of children with severe mental and physical disabilities.

Iodine Deficiency Disorders are the leading preventable cause of mental retardation in the world today.

More than 1.5 billion people are at risk, half of them children.

The prevention is simple—iodine supplementation.

The cost is approximately 5 cents of iodized salt per person per year.

So far, the Kiwanis IDD campaign has raised more than $45 million in cash and pledges. Kiwanis funds are now at work in more than 65 areas and UNICEF estimates that Kiwanis-funded IDD projects are now saving more than 8 million children around the globe.
